Kellie Santin: Creative Saxophone Improvising

Kellie Santin: Creative Saxophone Improvising

One of the greatest things about playing saxophone is the opportunity to improvise.  But how?  There are many publications that tackle this question by presenting hundreds of scales and patterns, leading the player to believe that improvising equates with some sort of physical gymnastics on an instrument.  This book takes a whole new approach.  8 different styles of music are covered, including modal jazz, blues, funk and minor blues, with two tunes in each.  The format for each tune begins with chord / scale warm-ups, then suggested solo ideas, the tune itself and closes with the harmony of the tune.  Information regarding the characteristics and an explanation of how to play in each style is profuse and the book has an excellent introduction for those new to improvising.  Ideally for those players who have a good understanding of the basics of sax playing.  It can be used to teach yourself or in conjunction with lessons with a teacher.  There is a separate cd for alto and tenor and a suggested listening and scale dictionary / glossary at the end.  Excellent value for money! Recommended!
