Rock & Roll Saxophone is a study of the basic techniques and sound effects used in Rock & Roll solo performances from the 1950s through to the '90s, with photos and brief bios of notable saxophonists of the style such as Lee Allen, Sil Austin, Sam Butera, Junior Walker and the Allstars, Steve Douglas, Clarence Clemons, Boots Randolph and Edgar Winter, to name a few.

The techniques covered are used in Pop, Blues, Country, Jazz and Rock music and include the growl, subtone, double tone, ghosting, altissimo, slap tongue, trills, vibrato, reed squeal, note bending and staccato.

The accompanying CD provides examples of the effects for both alto and tenor saxophones, and can be used for "play along" purposes. Guest artists who are featured on the CD include Myanna, Jenny Hill and the Burning Brass.
